Do you have a goal or a dream that you just can’t seem to reach? Perhaps, you’ve worked really hard towards it, but to no avail.

Often, we think that hard work is going to take us anywhere we want. All we need is discipline, right? We look at overweight people, and label them lazy and weak willed.

However, in reality, this is far from the truth.

Let’s take as an example,  an individual who is overweight and call her Marta.

Now, Marta has been overweight her entire life. But she doesn’t like it and therefore, jumps on every single diet she hears about. For Marta, being on a diet is something absolutely normal. On days, when she’s not dieting, she is learning, reading and researching about dieting. Every time when Marta goes on a diet, she successfully loses a substantial amount of weight, but as soon as she goes back to eating normally, she gains it all back.

Unfortunately, Marta is not alone. More than 60% of people in the UK today are either overweight or obese. And until very recently, I was one of them.

But why can’t Marta lose weight permanently? Is it her lack of discipline? Or maybe, she’s just lazy. Not really, in fact she is hard working, as well as disciplined. Not many could put themselves through countless of diets, again and again.

So what’s the problem then?

Her biggest problem is the way she sees herself. Without realising it, Marta has created an identity for herself as an overweight person. And no matter how many times she manages to lose weight, until she changes her identity as a big lady, she will always go back to being overweight.

Just like a thermostat in a heating system set to a specific temperature, it automatically activates the heating when the room temperature drops below the set level and continues until the desired warmth is restored.

We work in the exact same way, and not only when it comes to weight. We have a set identity as to how much money we make, whether we are employees or entrepreneurs, whether we are intelligent or not so much, whether we are successful or not, etc.

And this my lovely, is good news! Because, it means that your success is in your hands (and your mind).

I’ll go into more detail about strategies for changing our set identity. So please stay tuned.
